Spring/Summer Programs
Athletics
Ottawa Athletics
Do you need experience to join?
No! Previous experience is not required to join this program! Athletics (track and field type events) takes place at the Terry Fox Facility. Each week, athletes practice in small groups of 8 with two assigned coaches. Best efforts are made to separate athletes by age and ability. Over the course of the season, you will have the chance to run on the track, learn and practice shot put, learn and practice mini javelin, and learn and practice long-jump!
Do I need to compete if I sign up?
No, you do not! Special Olympics Ottawa Athletics will host a tournament with teams across Eastern Ontario at the end of each season, but it is your choice whether you sign-up or not. If you feel uncertain about competing, the coaches can help you decide if it would be a good fit!
What will I need to participate in this program successfully?
Participants should wear running shoes and clothing that is comfortable to run and move in. Our practices are held outdoors in the summer, so hats and sunscreen are strongly recommended.
Participants must bring a full water bottle with them to each practice.
Other:
Athletics is one of the larger programs in Special Olympics Ottawa. It is important for athletes (and caregivers) to know that other running groups also use the track at the same time as our practices so it is always very busy. Anyone needing close supervision should speak with the head coach before the program starts and at the beginning of each practice. There are bleachers for caregivers/families/friends who will stay and watch.
Athletics is a very physical program. The track that we use is 400m and field events are located at various stations around the track. Athletes should be prepared to move lots, whether walking/running/wheeling around the track as well as from one field station to the next.
We are thrilled to have athletes who use wheelchairs and other mobility assistive devices as part of our program. We strive to be very inclusive and help make adaptations wherever possible so every athlete can work toward their goals in a supportive environment!
Bocce

The C Level Practice Group is for athletes with good athletic abilities. They are called Red Devils and have snazzy uniforms!
The D and Recreational Level Practice Group is for athletes needing more support to learn and, in some cases, to play basketball, including adapted play. They are called Blue Devils and also have snazzy uniforms!
*Please note that formal “divisioning” of teams for competitions/advancement is done in accordance with provincial (or higher) practices.
At the start of each season, all athletes who register for the Kanata West Basketball will be assigned to the most appropriate Practice Group depending based on needs and skills as assessed by the program coaches. Any athlete whose abilities and needs are not known to the coaches, will need to attend an assessment practice or provide other evidence of skill. This step is a requirement to confirm registration.
If the numbers of athletes assigned to one or both Practice Groups exceeds the recognized capacity of that group(s) then a lottery will be held to allot the available spaces in accordance with the Community Guidelines. Any athlete not selected in the lottery before the capacity is reached will be placed on a Waiting List. Athletes assigned to a waiting list will have the fee charged at Registration refunded. Athletes are encouraged to come to practice in a swimsuit that allows for easy movement (we recommend a race-style suit however this is not mandatory) as well as goggles and a swim cap.
Flutter boards, pull-buoys and other equipment will be available at the pool for team use.
Please note that if purchasing swimsuits, goggles, swim cap, etc. is a financial limitation, you are encouraged to email our Head Coach at orleansriptidesswimming@specialolympicsottawa.ca. We never want finances to be a limiting factor for athlete participation!
Other
The Orléans Riptides swim team may not be a good fit for athletes that are non-swimmers or who cannot swim laps without assistance. As such, it is recommended that non-swimmers and swimmers who cannot swim laps unassisted first register for a learn to swim program. Special Olympics partners with SWAM (formerly Swimability) to provide affordable and accessible one-on-one swimming instruction to children with special needs. Please visit the S.W.A.M Ottawa website to learn more. Swimmers unable to swim 2 laps without stopping or who are unable to swim independently in deep water may be required to bring their own 1:1 support person should they still wish to join the team.
Orléans Riptides practice out of the Bob McQuarrie Recreation Complex. The building and pool are wheelchair accessible but should there be other accessibility concerns please contact the Orléans Riptide Head Coach at:
orleansriptidesswimming@specialolympicsottawa.ca
or reach out to the facility via telephone 613-580-9600 ext. 32821.

Families/caregivers play an important role in supporting young athletes to live a healthy, active life through sport. While families/caregivers are not expected to be hands-on for all activities, they are expected to stay in the immediate vicinity of the program area (i.e., gym) for the duration of programming. This is not a drop-off activity.
Our coaches and volunteers recognize that every athlete learns differently. They will work with families/caregivers to make recommendations (such as suggesting more or less hands-on support) that ensure the athlete’s needs are met.
If families/caregivers bring other youth (e.g., siblings) to the program, they will be asked to remain in the spectator area.
For information about registration, please watch the main page for registration periods in the spring/summer (normally April) and fall/winter (normally August). For more information about programs, please visit the Contact Us section to contact the clubs directly.
