The 7th annual Special Olympics Festival Breakfast, hosted by Kelly Santini LLP, was held in Ottawa on October 5, 2011. This year, the event welcomed over 325 guests, including more than 50 Special Olympics athletes and coaches, at Ottawa's new Convention Center.
The breakfast included entertainment by musician Paddy Stewart, a rhythmic gymnastics performance by SO-World Champion Christina Judd-Campbell, and a keynote address by Olympic bronze medalist Deidra Dionne.
Local Ottawa athletes and coaches were recognized for their achievements, including Athletes of the Year: Michael Roy and Meagan Michie, Volunteers of the Year: Norm McEwen and Myriam Gay, as well as the McCool Sportsmanship Award, presented to athlete Melanie Heroux.
The event raised over $27,000 for Special Olympics Ontario programs.
Special highlights; Mayor Jim Watson, Police Chief Vern White and Senator Jim Munson being escorted with athletes, volunteers and coaches by the Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band. The senator was also joined by aspiring Special Olympics athlete Michael Trinque. He's a graduate of the Friends of the Senate Program and works once a week in Munson's office as a special assistant.
